Gate Wheels for Chain Link Gates

Gate wheels are a common addition for gate installations. They can be used with chain link fence gates to provide a rolling gate that is easy to move and open as needed. Whether you own a residential or commercial property, chain link fencing paired with such wheeled gates can significantly improve access and usability.

Wheels are a great addition to any chain-link fencing job and eliminate unnecessary lifting while reducing strain on the gate structure. This also makes daily operation smoother and more reliable. When designed correctly, a chain link fence rolling gate offers both convenience and long-term durability.

At All American Fence Erectors, we have over 40 years of experience installing chain link fences and gates that are customized to fit your needs. That's why we offer gate wheels as an additional accessory option for all our chain link fence jobs. Every gate is selected based on site conditions and usage frequency, ensuring your gate performs consistently. Our goal is to make sure each gate we install functions smoothly for years.

Rolling Gate Wheel Options

We provide two different options for wheels on chain link rolling gates: Rubber wheels and V-groove wheels. Selecting the right wheel plays a critical role in how well your gate tracks and aligns over time.

Rubber Wheels

Rubber wheels are designed to roll freely over any type of terrain, but remember, it's only as good as the ground it's rolling on. If you have rocky, sandy, or uneven ground under your gate, it will make opening and closing your gate wheel very difficult. If you have smooth, hard-packed level dirt or concrete, the rubber wheels work reasonably well, though some manual guidance into the latch is often required.

If you aren't using the gate too often, it may not be of concern. This wheel option is more affordable of the two, and commonly used for lighter-duty applications, but it typically requires two hands and a little muscle to use.

Angle/V-groove Wheel

The angle or V-groove option is the preferred solution as the gate guides perfectly in the same spot every time you open and close the gate wheel. This design guides the rolling gate along a fixed path, ensuring proper alignment every time.

For the V-groove wheel option to work, you must have a concrete block across the gate opening for the angle/v-track to bolt to. If you do not have a concrete driveway or your concrete driveway doesn't reach the gate opening, we can provide a quote for pouring a small concrete strip that works perfectly for the cause (at an additional fee).

While slightly more expensive, the V-groove wheel option requires minimal effort to operate and is the only compatible setup for future gate operators. Although we do not install motors, we can refer you to a specialist if your chain link fence rolling gate requires automation.

Choosing the right gate wheel can significantly impact how well your gate performs over the years. Below is a clear comparison to help you decide which option best fits your property and usage needs.

When properly selected, the appropriate wheel reduces sagging, minimizes wear on posts, and keeps your gate aligned. This is especially important for a rolling gate that experiences frequent use.

Below is a simple comparison to help guide your decision:

Rubber Wheel - Pros:

  • Lower upfront cost
  • Simple installation
  • Suitable for light-use gate setups

Rubber Wheel - Cons:

  • Requires concrete-level ground to function well
  • Needs manual guidance into latch
  • Less ideal for frequent gate use

V-Groove Wheel - Pros:

  • Tracks consistently every time
  • Requires minimal effort to operate
  • Best option for automation-ready gate wheel systems

V-Groove Wheel - Cons:

  • Slightly higher installation cost
  • Requires concrete track support

For homeowners and businesses looking for long-term reliability, the V-groove rolling gate wheel is often the smarter investment. If budget or low usage is the priority, rubber wheels still offer dependable performance when installed on suitable surfaces. Either way, selecting the right wheel for your chain link fence rolling gate ensures your gate works the way it should — smoothly, safely, and without frustration.
