Comparing Different Types of Residential Privacy Fences

If you’re looking to add some privacy to your home and yard, a new fence installation is the way to go. There are many options for residential privacy fences, but the different types of privacy fences can vary dramatically when it comes to price, quality, and overall value. Before you invest your hard-earned money, consider the pros and cons of the various residential fence types and gates.

Chain Link

While there are different types of privacy fences, chain link has risen in recent years to become one of the most preferred choices for privacy fencing, and for a good reason. A privacy chain link fence offers all of the benefits of a quality residential privacy fence with few drawbacks.

Pros: When we’re talking about chain link vs vinyl, chain link wins for durability, longevity, and ease of maintenance. This type of privacy fence is also more cost-effective than wood and not subject to rot. Chain link fencing can last a lifetime, it’s easy to repair, and the screen provides 95% privacy. It’s the superior choice for most homeowners.

Cons: The main drawback for some buyers is the lack of symmetry. The privacy screen results in one side of the fence looking smooth while the other side has exposed rails and posts. This isn’t an issue for most buyers, but it’s something to be cognizant of.

PVC Vinyl

PVC is one of the most popular materials for residential types of privacy fences. The terms “PVC” and “vinyl” are used interchangeably in the fencing industry, both referring to the same type of plastic composite material.

Pros: Vinyl is easy to clean, usually requiring just a wet rag. It’s also available in a few different colors and designs, so you have a bit more control over the look of this residential fence type.

Cons: The cost of different types of privacy fences varies greatly, but vinyl is one of the most expensive fencing materials available. Add to that the lack of durability from objects or things hitting it. Common issues we see are young kids or animals damaging the fence, and due to its all-plastic nature, it just can’t handle much abuse, unlike that of other types of privacy fences like chain link or privacy chain link.

Wood

Wood is the classic fencing material, ideal for anyone looking to achieve that traditional American home look. As newer materials for residential fences become popular, wood doesn’t enjoy the same market dominance as it once did.

Pros: Wood can last a long time, and it’s easy to replace individual boards as sections of the fence experience wear. Unlike PVC and many other residential privacy fence types, wood can be painted over, so it’s great for home remodels.

Cons: Wood is a porous material, so this type of privacy fence is particularly vulnerable to moisture and the elements. A good stain and finish can slow the effects of time, but no fence is impenetrable. Perhaps the biggest drawback, though, is the amount of maintenance involved. Fencing needs to be sanded, primed, and repainted regularly.
